* Reindeer shed their antlers every year.
* Both female (cow) and male (bull) reindeer have antlers!
* Reindeer are members of the deer family. They are mammals in the Animal Kingdom.
* Reindeer are very good swimmers and runners!
* The coat of a reindeer is thick. It's unique, hollow hairs trap air which help provide insulation for warmth. The hairs also help keep reindeer buoyant in the water.
* The fuzzy covering of a reindeer's antlers is called velvet.
* The color of a reindeer's coat varies from darker brown in the summer to lighter beige/brown in the winter. They usually have some white on their belly, tail, mane, or above their hooves.
* Reindeer are 3 to 4 feet in height and weigh up to 400 pounds.
* Reindeer live in Arctic tundra, forests, and mountain regions. They are found in Northern Europe, Asia, and North America.
* Leaves, lichens (small flowerless plant on rocks, trees, etc.), mosses, sedges (grassy plants in wet areas), and herbs are the favorite food of reindeer. They are herbivores (plant eaters)!
* The wolf is a natural predator or the caribou.
* Reindeer are sometimes called Caribou. They are the same species. In Europe, it is known as the "reindeer". "Caribou" is the North American name for this deer.
* Caribou herds migrate 2 times a year.
* Reindeer hooves are large. They function like snowshoes to help reindeer walk on snow, serve as paddles in the water, and make efficient scoops when pawing through snow to uncover lichens.
